    The Flaming Lips

The Friday night opener for the Word of South festival, GRAMMY® Award-winning The Flaming Lips are known for their brave, frequently brilliant, and obscure eclectic tracks in the world of alternative rock bands.  From their beginnings as Oklahoma outsiders to their mid-'90s pop-culture breakthrough to their status as one of the most respected groups of the 21st century, the Lips rode one of the more surreal career trajectories in pop music. Performing the highly successful album “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” the sci-fi-themed quasi-concept album cast The Flaming Lips’ most playful and profound songs to date, in a wondrous swirl of ambient electronics, digital beats, and psychedelic splendor. It remains the Flaming Lips’ most successful album, landing the band their first RIAA certified Gold Record.

    The Revivalists

Eight-piece rock 'n' roll collective The Revivalists – David Shaw [lead vocals, guitar], Zack Feinberg [guitar], Andrew Campanelli [drums], George Gekas [bass], Ed Williams [pedal steel guitar], Rob Ingraham [saxophone], Michael Girardot [keyboard, trumpet], and PJ Howard [drums, percussion] – have made the journey from hole-in-the-wall gigs to sold-out shows at hallowed venues, multiplatinum success, more than 800 million streams and major media praise. Their fifth album, Pour It Out Into The Night (Concord Records) is a life-affirming album about living in the moment, fueled by lessons in gratitude and life realizations. As the world came to a standstill in the years since their last album, Take Good Care, personal experiences and life challenges abounded, with band members having their first children, getting married, and navigating the mental hurdles of lockdown. On lead single "Kid" – a hopeful anthem about capturing the essence of life, self-belief, and living for the spirit – piano peeks through bright acoustic guitar as a bold beat powers the chantable chorus, "Hey kid, just sing the songs that wake the dead, then you keep them ringing in your head." “Kid” introduces an album that offers a nostalgic hopefulness rooted in living for who you are, an unburdening, and an appreciation for the here and now. Renowned for their live prowess, soulful alt-rock anthems, distinct mix of many of the classic styles of American music, and outward generosity through their philanthropic Rev Causes initiative, The Revivalists broke through with 2015's Men Amongst Mountains, which featured the double-platinum smash single and Billboard Hot 100 hit "Wish I Knew You."

    Gipsy Kings

Leon County Division of Tourism/ Visit Tallahassee and Opening Nights at Florida State University (FSU) are thrilled to announce the world-renowned musical ensemble, the Gipsy Kings, featuring the incomparable Nicolas Reyes with special guest The Maharajah Flamenco Trio, will perform live at the Adderley Amphitheater at Cascades Park on Friday, October 20, 2023, at 7:30 pm. Known for their infectious rhythms and soul-stirring melodies, the Gipsy Kings has enthralled audiences across the globe with their unique fusion of flamenco, salsa, and pop for more than 25 years. Their magnetic stage presence and extraordinary musicianship have earned them a devoted following and a place among music legends. Over the years, the music of the Gipsy Kings has incorporated elements of Latin and Cuban styles, Arabic music, reggae, and jazz guitar reminiscent of the French Gypsy master Django Reinhardt. Yet, as heard on their just-released ninth studio album, they have yet to lose their intense connection to the traditional flamenco of their heritage, keeping a spotlight on Tonino Baliardo’s fluid guitar work and Nicolas Reyes’s powerful vocals. This broad cultural mix has enabled the Gipsy Kings to be embraced wherever they play—from China to Brazil, New Orleans to Russia, and Australia to Africa. The band’s music has also remained visible over the years throughout popular culture. They recently performed their version of “Volare,” which was an international hit in 1989, on an episode of Dancing with the Stars. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and on the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular, Randy Newman-penned theme, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” The concert is co-presented by Leon County Division of Tourism / Visit Tallahassee and Opening Nights at FSU and is a preview of Opening Night's 2023-2024 Season, which will be announced on August 1.
